I get him up the stairs and into my home, then help him to the couch. “Why didn’t you come to me? I spoke to you after everything. You seemed okay. I thought something was wrong, but you played it off, and I just assumed it was because you were still mad at me,” I say, getting a bottle of water from the fridge and taking it back to him.

He waves the bottle away. “I was the last one. Ya know?” He falls off the couch and sits with his knees in his chest.

“The last one for what?”

“I talked to him, he was happy. He’d just gotten into medical school. He was out of the rut. He promised…” Xav sniffs, wiping his face with his hands. “He pulled away too.”

“Pulled away? Who else pulled away?” I hold the bottle out to him again as I sit beside him on my couch. “Please drink this.”

“Non! Sispann! Koute! You don’t listen… Jessop, he didn't drop out… He hung himself in his dorm room. They hushed it. Swept him under. I don’t want them hushing you.” He’s getting loud, sounding desperate.

I set the bottle on the table and put my hands on Xavier’s face to try to keep him looking at me. “Nobody's hushing me. I haven’t found anyone who could keep me quiet for long either.” I try to make a joke, but he doesn’t like it. I pull him to me, which I’m sure is a funny sight. “Xavier, I promise you, nothing is going to happen to me. Please calm down.”

He grabs me tightly. It hurts, but I’ll take it. His head is against my arms, and I can feel the tears. “I can't lose someone else that means so much to me.”

I run my fingers through his dreads. “Never, you’d never, ever completely lose me. It doesn’t matter if we’re a world apart, if you need me, I’ll drop everything to help you. Always, I’ll always come when you call.”

“Not lately.” He sounds so broken.

“You’ve wanted to go out at night, and I’ve been too tired. You’re really upset with me? Two weeks! I don’t stop everything and come to you for two weeks, and you show up like this!” I push him off me and stand. “What about all five years of college? You were always too busy for me.” Now I’m the one raising my voice.

He lurches forward. “I may have been busy, but I knew what you were up to. Who do ya think took care of Billy Newman? Or Mike Birbiglia? I always knew who you were cattin’ with, so I didn’t worry! You might not have seen me, but I was there!”

“UGH! You’re so fucking blind! All you think about is me, me, me, me, me! Oh, let’s make sure Aviana isn’t fucking anyone I don’t like. Why keep tabs on me? What’s the point?” I turn my back to him, I’m starting to get upset, and when I get upset, I cry. I wipe at my face before turning back. “You make me so mad I could just smack you, but then I’d be the one hurt because I hurt you when you hurt me all the time.”

He pushes his dreads back out of his face. Christ, we’re both blubbering messes. Only it looks good on him, the bastard. “Hurt you? How have I ever hurt you?” Sniff. “I’ve only ever stood in your corner, rallied for ya. Celebrated when ya did well, took out any who fucked with ya that you couldn’t handle. All I’ve ever done was try to keep my best friend happy and whole.” He stands up. “This- comin’ here. Comin’ back to this place- I shoulda just left. Since all I’m doing is fuckin’ it up for everyone. You, my family, my mentors.” He starts fishing in his pockets. “Fuck are my keys?”

I poke Xavier in the chest. “You aren’t going anywhere! You really want to know how you hurt me? I can tell you. It’s not like you’ll remember it in the morning. You’ve hurt me because you’re blind! I’ve shown you, in every possible way I can think of, how I feel. You don’t feel the same, I’m getting it now, it was a lost cause. However, I’ve been in love with you for YEARS! I was right in what I said coming home. We may talk in passing, but you’ll get too busy, and I’ll be here or somewhere trying to get on with my life.” One last poke to the chest and he hits the ground. I turn and walk away, the tears coming down my face, making me look a mess.

Bon Seyè a, kisa m 'fè? Mama Isa, she said the Lord was plannin’ somethin’. Wouldn’t tell me what. I bet the leaves and the bones showed her. I kissed my best friend. I sit up and the living room is dark, but the smell of gumbo invades my nostrils. Not just any gumbo, but Mama Isa’s. I know her spices anywhere. How long was I out? I look at my cell and see it’s after nine. Last I remember looking, it was like five-ish. That was before she spilled her guts. Told me she’s in love with me. Has been. Has been? That’s how I feel. I feel like the last one to the party, and now everyone expects me to be the entertainment. She’s gonna wanna know how I feel. How do I tell her I don’t know? I love her, but am I in love with her?

Can't I just pretend it didn’t happen? Stand up, go looking for her, and act like I don’t remember until I suss it out? She said it herself, she doesn’t expect me to remember it. I touch my mouth. I still feel her lips, soft, plump and juicy. They taste like salt and flesh. I can't help but imagine what the rest of her may taste like. I crack my neck. Do we owe it to ourselves to explore what could be? Is it worth ruining an almost twenty-year friendship over a little thing like a kiss? I get up, following my nose. There’s the food, untouched, but simmering on the stove. I turn on the light, find the baguette, and cracking it, I smother it with herbed butter before fixing the bowls. Gettin’ them and a couple beers on a tray, I head for Ana’s room.

I knock and wait. I’m pretty sure I just heard a sniffle and a throat clear before the door opens. “Feel any better?” she asks, opening the door wider. From the light behind her, I can see the puffiness under her red-rimmed eyes.

“It’s yet to be determined, but I figure Mama Isa’s gumbo will clear both our heads. C’mere and eat with me.”  I hold up the tray as I pass her and set it on the bed.

She grabs her computer, moving it to the bedside table, then speaks with her back to me. “If you're going to tell me you only think of me as a friend, just do it and get it over with, please.”

Welcome Author Eliza Ames

Eliza is the author of Fantasy and YA Fantasy

Let's see what she's got to say!

What got you writing?

"What got me writing was my nature. I have always been a story-teller. I was the kid at camp that told such scary stories the other kids had nightmares. I was the teen in school who through off the English curve. I'm the adult today that tells the ""how you met your spouse"" story that everyone talks about. I've done probably more career-level jobs than anyone I know, but writing has always been the part of me that worked the best. I have often thought that if I could just write every interaction, my life would be so much better. When I write, no one misunderstands my meaning. When I talk, though, sometimes I grate on people's nerves without even realizing I have done it.

Writing is more than just knowing how to craft a sentence, especially in my genre. As a fantasy author, I get to build worlds. I have to understand the science of my worlds -- what would make magic a part of evolution, why animals that exist only in my world even would have developed, and why people look the way they do. I also have to frame continents and oceans and how the double moons affect those oceans. Then, when I add the people, they have to seem real too. Although I can and do base them off of historical references, my technology level of my worlds can be altered by things Earth simply doesn't have. In my Thobel world, for example, there are magical healers who can place a hand on a person and scan them physically. This means that, although the world is technologically equal to late middle ages on Earth, the anatomy knowledge of the people will naturally be superior.

Being a people observer also serves my writing a great deal. I can (and often do) notice things about people that surprises them. That happens because I'm always thinking about motivations. I want my characters to seem real. They certainly do to me. I have a lot of characters between three series (not all released yet) and I never confuse them. They each have quirks, catch phrases, and gestures unique to them. I can't confuse them because they are alive to me. They are friends I visit in my dreams, and they are friends I get to share with my readers.

Although the request asked me to pick one topic to answer and I picked ""What got you writing?"", I suppose I actually picked two, because my relationship with my characters is so much like a friendship that it keeps me writing. Even if I couldn't publish, I'd still write about these friends. The more time I give each one, the more alive they feel and so I do write about them constantly. I have books, of course, but also short stories, too.  I plot a lot. I always have a direction in mind, but occasionally my characters do things that surprise me. When I started out to write the ""Sogell Revolution Tetralogy"", I never picked one love interest for my main character. I gave her three to choose from. She chose the one that fit her best and I finished the series the way she wanted. In the ""Faith Champion Chronicles"" I haven't picked a love interest for Faith. She'll tell me when she's ready.

See, they are real to me."

Welcome Author Darlene Tallman

Darlene is a MC, contemporary romance, and kid's series (Mischief Kitties) Author.

Let's see what she's got to say!

Why I keep writing.

I'm fortunate with the tribe of women I've surrounded myself with because roughly a year and a half ago, I nearly quit writing. Some things were said to me and I took them to heart, not examining the truth behind the words and I figured, it would be better for me to give it up. In short - my integrity was called into question, something that I hold dear. I reached out to two of my peers as well as several on my beta team and to keep this from running on and on, they talked me off the ledge. I know I can pick the phone up and go over story issues and get genuine feedback; they won't blow any smoke up my ass. They make me strive to be a better writer than I was on the previous book. They've celebrated the victories with me and commiserated when I got a crappy review. They remind me that my stories may not be everyone's cup of tea but they might be someone's shot of whiskey!

Bio:

I'm a lover of the written word and enjoy escaping into the worlds that authors create. Growing up, I wanted to be a writer but caved to that pressure of "you can't earn a living that way" and never pursued it as anything more than a hobby. In 2015, I started what became my first book, "Bountiful Harvest", and haven't stopped, letting the muses frolic how they want!

S.I. Hayes Presents

Authors Running Their Mouths is the creative brain child of Author S.I. Hayes Join her as she asks other Authors to let loose and Run their mouths!

Welcome Author Cree Nations.

Cree is an action/romance author.

Let's see what she's got to say!

Why do you Write?

I write because it's part of breathing for me. I don't remember a time in my life that I haven't written. I started writing short poems at the age of six and I am 71 now so you do the math.  I wrote a short book in tenth grade on the Ancient History of Rome and made an A+ on it. My history teacher used it in her classes until she retired twenty years later. Believe it or not my ex husband is the one that encouraged me to write that first book in 1992 - the one I tried without success to have published the traditional way.
With those rejections I continued to write and would just pack the manuscripts away in boxes.  The thought to quit never entered my mind. My poetry was published or is published I should say and has been for fifteen years. My daughter in law introduced me to Facebook in 1989 and I did the social media thing. Then one day (on Facebook) I met an amazing author by the name of Liberty Parker who said you are going to write that book and self publish it. That was in 2015 and I wrote Malakai Stone Texas Heat Book 1 and it went live in 2016. Without Liberty's encouragement and guidance I would not have made it. I now have six more books published, and have sponsored or hosted four Anthologies.
I do get discouraged, I think that's only natural for writers. And I procrastinate on a regular basis. I have at least ten works in progress and never seem to have enough time to write. My next book Is His Mark and it's due to go live later this month. I hope to have four more books out by the end of this year. I have many that inspire me on a daily basis, my family of course and other authors like Leah Negron, Sharon Johnson, London Michelle, Elias Raven, Steven Evans, Mitch Workman, Darlene Tallman, Vera Quinn, and of course the amazing Liberty Parker. I've gotten many great reviews, and it blows me away each time and humbles me greatly.
I've received two 1 star reviews - the first one was given honestly and I learned a great deal from it. The second was given in spite and angered me. I got over it. I have an amazing Assistant Tania Gray who is always there to hold me up when I stumble. I have Shanna Blanton PA who is a great voice of reason for me. And there is one who that I turn to and he is ever present. This community that we are privileged to be part of is amazing.
Of course there is ugly and there is beauty the bad does come with the good. And the blessing is that the good is so much better than the bad. I hope I've written what you needed. It is never easy for me to write about me.    I am a Texas Woman - a blend of tangy, salty, sweet sass. Yep that's me Cree.

Bio:

I am the mother of two sons and Ninny to six grandones. I am the Mommie to three cats, and one dog. Don't tell anyone but it's Milo my 14 year old catgirl that rules this house. Her meow is my command. I should be retired, or so society says but nope I'm working full time and write when I can. I love the written word, and read voraciously. I write poetry, and action adventure romance with erotica blended in to the story. I've written a Dark Romance, and loved writing it. I write a series called Texas Heat with hot alpha males, and females that know how to handle them. I worked as a Counselor for victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault & Human Trafficking and my stories have that in them - based on fact but written in fiction in hopes I can bring attention to the horrible fact that human trafficking is the second in the world highest money making industry there is. The public sees it on the news and then it is gone, but maybe reading about it they'll see that wow this is happening in real life TODAY. I hope my readers enjoy my stories and recommend me to their friends.

Welcome Author Mary R. Woldering.

Mary is a Genre: Historical-Urban Fantasy author.

Let's see what she's got to say!

Why do you Write?

I have written all my life.  I still write because I must put all the stories down for posterity. I am a chronicler of the unknown and of other realms in which my soul may have traveled. I took it upon myself to be the one who wrote about the unrealities I experienced in my live while I still could do so. I don't really have an inspiration for writing except for random muses and the crazy things I'm told. I haven't thought of quitting lately, even though my sales are just about non-existent. I'm guessing my two adult children keep me going more than anyone does. My first review was a 5 star, but it was a friend review so I almost guess it shouldn't count. It was my daughter, who had also been a beta reader. She loves the stories anyway. Shortly after that I received a 1-star was a rating rather than a review from a group on Goodreads. It wasn't fair or honest. I received it two days after I submitted it, and knew it just isn't possible to read a book that quickly. The writer of it addressed me in the group and told me to quickly unpublish my book and take it away because it was an insult to the craft of writing.

I stayed out of Goodreads groups and away from most review groups after that.
I didn't quit and likely won't for the sheer love of telling a story!

S.I. Hayes Presents

Authors Running Their Mouths is the creative brain child of Author S.I. Hayes Join her as she asks other Authors to let loose and Run their mouths!

Welcome Author Chrissy Moon.

Chrisy is a Genre: Women's fiction; horror (in short stories); and poetry author. Let's see what she's got to say!

Who holds you up when you want to quit?

I have a great support system! Sisters, best friends, and children are instrumental to keeping my encouragement afloat, as well as my friends in the industry.

Honestly however, at least at this point in time, the person who really keeps me going is my partner, Chris. It’s really funny, too, because I don’t exactly make it easy for him. Although I am saccharine sweet to friends and people I’m just getting to know, once someone is in a serious relationship with me, I turn into this psycho. I don’t know why—if I didn’t want to hold myself accountable, I suppose I could blame my Venus in Aries.

Okay, I guess I’m exaggerating. A little bit. Maybe I don’t turn crazy exactly, but I know I’m not an easy person to be in a relationship with. I’m aware of it as I’m giving him a hard time.
Yet I would say for the most part, he knows me fairly well, and this is vital to helping me through a “I-want-to-quit-writing” funk. He can pull out the memories in his brain about anything that’ll help me, anything from glowing book reviews to previous times when I felt discouraged but overcame it. It always leads back to the same path in my mind: to a place sunny and happy, where my creativity lies.

I don’t want to say that he’s the only reason why I go on writing, though. That’s not fair to either of us. I’m a completed person without anybody else, and because of this, I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself regarding any project that I take on. I take things personally. I get emotional. It shows. Everyone can see it, but it’s also why I write about feelings so well.

The in-between stuff in a novel is what gets me—the plot organization and continuity. I have to make a lot of charts and notes so I don’t get lost, and they have to be on paper in front of me and not on a screen. I tape them up on my wall. I analyze words better the old-fashioned way.
I love stories in all forms, so watching TV shows, reading other people’s books, and listening to music keeps me going as well. Art is probably one of the best things about the human race, so it’s easy to feel inspired after listening to a great song or watching a well-made movie. I also have to step away from writing every once in a while, but this often backfires on me because I’ll get too complacent and just be happy Netflixing and chilling.

And again we get back to Chris. To say he’s an extremely busy person would be putting it lightly, so as he’s running around with his hectic schedule, my idleness is emphasized and I’m forced to get back on my feet and get back to what I do best, which is writing about my feelings. Only in this industry, I have to convert those feelings into something consumable for the masses, something many people can relate to and be entertained by.

I’m still trying to find that perfect balance between storytelling and self-expression, and my support group is with me every step of the way.

Bio:

Chrissy suffers from road rage, would like to own a movie theater-sized popcorn popper one day, and enjoys country music.

She has two sons (one adult and one young), is a Power Ranger nerd, and would like to call herself a linguist by hobby, even though she's still learning her native English. (Who isn't?)

She enjoys writing about strong women and wants to inspire and amuse the world with her words.
